It has been an interesting year for baseball bats.
2011 began with the banning of all composite little league bats.* All little league bats are rated for performance: essentially the maximum speed at which a ball can leave the bat. The rule exists to control the speed at which a ball can reach a fielder. Composite little league bats evidenced material changes in the composition of the bat as the bat was used. Unlike aluminum or wood bats, the maximum exit speed increased as the bat composition broke down. This created a bat with an exit speed that exceed the standard.  And so these bats were banned.
Bat manufacturers tried to delay the ban and to “grandfather” in bats that existed at the time of the ban. Little League baseball said no. Manufacturers (Easton, Louisville, DeMarini, etc.) presented their 2011 bats to LLB for evaluation and approval. A few passed the new testing; a good number failed. Parents and players were left trying to determine if the bat they owned or the bat they intended to purchase would be allowed.
Play it Again Sports developed a website: www.IsYourBatLegal.com. to answer these questions. Please visit the site for the current status of little league bats.
Senior league bats** are often the next bat purchased by the older little league player. This bat has a larger barrel (usually 2 and 5/8 inches). In our area, with some possible exceptions, this bat can be used by the summer league travel-ball players. Early rumblings are that some rule changes may be coming for this bat.
High School bats*** manufactured with the exit speed standard of BESR (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) will be banned as of January 1st 2012. A new BBCA/BBCOR standard will apply to all High School bats that diminishes the exit speed of the bat. The stated purpose is to protect fielders and will likely result in diminished batting averages and less scoring. High School (and College) baseball are headed back to the future.

*LLB is between 24 an 32 inches in length and has a barrel diameter of 2 and 1/4 inches.

**SLB is between 27 and 32″ in length and has a barrel diameter of 2 and 5/8 inches or in some models 2 and 3/4 inches.

***HSB is between 29 and 34″ in length and has a barrel diameter of 2 and 5/8 inches
